Sunday 13 November 2016, Athens Authentic Marathon. Every autumn, there is a day where thousands of people run the biggest race of their lives, in the footsteps of the ancient gods and heros that gave birth to Western Civilization.
The endurance is tested to the limit, no obstacle seems insurmountable and the rewards are not counted in money. Athens Authentic Marathon is like no other on earth. Is a unique event, an exceptional lifetime experience for all Marathon runners around the world, held in Greece of culture and of sports.
Thousands people -this year’s Greek organization with the record number of 50.000 runners- will running along at 42 km, in this majestic celebration, following the traditional route from the town of Marathon, in northeast Attica, the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. It runs along the original route that took the runner Pheidippides in 490 b.c. bringing his joyous message of the Athenian victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon and died.
Along the way, runners will have to climb a number of hills, including the base of Mount Pendeli. The Marathon ends in the Panathinaiko Stadium built entirely in white marble for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The marble stadium is located on the same spot where remains of an ancient stadium used for the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece were excavated.
The joy of participating in the marathon of Athens lies not only professional athletes, but also amateur runners of all ages from around the world.
Musicians and dance groups create a festive atmosphere around the sporting event, and utterly contribute to a magical day full of positive energy and messages of hope, called “Athens Marathon, the Authentic”.
